Program Abstract

Within the proposed project program “Towards prevention and therapy of allergy” a multidisciplinary group of scientists has joined to develop new forms of prevention and therapy for allergy. IgE-associated allergies represent a severe health problem in industrialized countries because of their continuously increasing prevalence. Allergy affects more than 25% of the population and, if not properly diagnosed and treated, often progresses to severe and disabling manifestations such as asthma.

The research team builds on more than 20 years of experience in the molecular and immunological characterization of disease-causing allergens. Now they plan to use clinically important allergens to develop new forms of prevention and treatment which target allergic diseases from various aspects. One of the major long term goals is the development of allergen-specific prevention strategies for allergic diseases.
